Authority
Compliance through authority is based on the fact people trust experts and respect people with more power or more famous than themselves.
An example of this would be if a student saw a petition started by a peer, and one started by their parents or the school director, they'd be more likely to sign that started by the person with more authority.
A research that proved this showed that doctors with their degrees on their office walls were more respected than otherwise.
Reciprocity
Reciprocity relies on our selflessness and desire to empathize with others and to help those that help ourselves. It shows how someone is more likely to comply and help someone back if they've been helped by that person.
A study that demonstrated this was conducted in a restaurant, where waiters gave different customers varying amounts of mints after a meal, from none to two, and the quantity of tips given to waiters were measured and compared. The more mints given, and the more the waiter flattered the customers, the greater the tipping.
Consensus
Consensus relies on our desire to fit in, and to avoid being different or standing out to minimize social pressure from others.
A research that proved this was conducted in a hotel where guests were shown on the bathroom different signs in relation to reusing towels. The sign that only stated the ecological benefits was much less effective than that which stated the fact the majority of people reuse their towels, incentivizing others to do the same.
