Erikson's Developmental Stages
1)Trust vs. Mistrust
First year of life
Amount of trust experienced in infancy sets the stage for a lifelong expectation that the world is pleasant.
2) Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
1 year to 3 year
Independence and autonomy begins; excessive punishment and restraint can cause doubt and shame.
3) Initiative vs. Guilt
Preschool years (3 years to 5 years)
Social interactions enforce new challenges and behavior; guilt arises out of irresponsibility and anxiety.
4) Industry vs. Inferiority
Elementary years (6 years to 10 years)
Energy is directed towards knowledge and intellectual skills; child may feel incompetent and unproductive.
5) Identity vs. Identity Confusion
Adolescent years (10 years to 20 years)
Adolescents are discovering themselves; healthy path leads to self discovery, unhealthy path leads to confusion.
6) Intimacy vs. Isolation
Early adulthood (20 years to 30 years)
Pressure begins to form intimate relationships; isolation can occur if lacking relationships.
7) Generativity vs. Stagnation
Middle adulthood (40 years to 50 years)
Individuals are interested in helping the younger generation; the feeling of having not helped can cause stagnation.
8) Integrity vs. Despair
Late adulthood (60 years to death)
Reflects on their past; integrity is achieved if they are happy when reflecting, despair is achieved if they are not happy with their memories.
