UNHEALTHY HABITS IN TEENS
DRUGS
Most used in teenagers
Cocaine
Marijuana
LSD
Ketamine
CONSEQUENCES
Physical issues
The effects of drugs can vary drastically from person to person
Many illegal drugs contain unknown substances
Drugs can lead to overdose
Mental issues
Drugs may be a trigger for mental illness to young people
Drugs can worsen an existing condition
ALCOHOL
CONSEQUENCES
LONG-TERM
The younger a person is when they start drinking in parties, with friends or alone, the greater the likelihood of an alcohol problem later in life
National Survey on Drug use and Health
Adults aged 21 or older who had first used alcohol at age 14 or younger were more likely to be classified with alcohol dependence or misuse than adults who had their first drink at age 21 or older.
MID-TERM
In adolescent's brain
There's a part of the brain called frontal lobe which purpose is to control higher order abilities like abstract thought, impulse control and decision-making.
This region suffers a dramatic change during adolescence.
Drinking at young age significantly cuts down the levels of frontal lobe GABA which is the late-maturing region of the brain responsible for planning, organization, short-term memory, cognitive control, and decision-making.
Therefore, those skills end up under-developed
SHORT-TERM
Affects concentration
It was proved that drinking alcohol makes harder to focus in daily activities as well as academic tasks or exams, for instance, tests, essays, projects and a whole career in short terms.
Assault risk
Increased risk of drunk driving
Violent behaviour
Victim of violence assault
Victim of weapon assault (Gun, knife, bottle, etc)
Most common
Vodka
Rum
Beer
Tequila
CIGARETTES
Smoking is one of the first activities teens do when growing up.
CONSEQUENCES
Cancer
Excess of cigaretes produce cancer as poisons in cigarette smoke can weaken the body’s immune system, making it harder to kill cancer cells.
Diabetes
Smoking increases your chance of having type 2 diabetes. Indeed, smokers are 30–40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. And people with diabetes who smoke are more likely than nonsmokers to have trouble with insulin dosing and with controlling their disease
Heart disease
Smoking increases the formation of plaque in blood vessels. Coronary Heart Diseaseoccurs when arteries that carry blood to the heart muscle are narrowed by plaque or blocked by clots. Chemicals in cigarette smoke force the blood to thicken and form clots inside veins and arteries.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
COPD is normally caused by cigarette smoking, though long-term exposure to other lung irritants can contribute to CODP as well.
Chronic bronchitis
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. Chronic bronchitis, however, is most commonly caused by cigarette smoking.
JUNK FOOD AND DRINK
CONSEQUENCES
Overweight
Besides giving you a low quality of life, mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders are possible too
Diabetes
The excessive amount of sugar may lead a person to this condition
High blood pressure
A diet high in salt, fat, and/or cholesterol is one of the main causes of this disease
It's the kind of food that is high in calories from sugar or fat, with little dietary fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, or other important forms of nutritional value.
