June Revolt
on 16th june 1953, Ulbricht announced the need for industrial productivity to increase by 10% while workers wages would remain the same
on the 17th, 300 builders on stalinallee start striking, joined by thousands of other workers
starting in east berlin but spreading to all of east germany, they attacked prisons, police stations and courthouses
Ulbricht appealed to the soviet union, and 20,000 soldiers with 600 tanks moved in to suppress the revolts

Impact
ironically, this allowed Ulbricht to actually strengthen his position
after the uprising, 20 protestors were executed and 500 imprisoned
ulbricht used the uprising to justify a massive purge of the SED, replacing 20,000 members

stalin died in march 1953, ulbricht loved stalin
the new soviet leaders made a document entitled 'Measures for restoring political situation in the GDR'
