B5 health and disease
health
health is a state of physical and mental well bieng, disease is a major contributor to ill health - other factors include diet, stress and life situations

Why is HIV dangerous?
It can suppress the immune system and makes people more susceptible to catching other infectious diseases
In addition to being bad for the sufferer, non-communicable diseases can represent a massive financial burden. Can you give three bits of evidence to support this statement?

By 2030, it is estimated that the global cost of cardiovascular disease will exceed US$1,000,000,000,000 (~£750 billion).
pathogens
-
bacteria
-
can reproduce rapidly in warm, moist conditions which have a good supply of oxygen

easles is a disease that is the result of a virus. Symptoms of measles include red skin (as seen in the following image) and a fever.
What are the characteristics of viruses, like the one that causes measles?
very small, reproduce rapidly, invade host cells
-
Non communicable disease
risk factors
-
often , non communicable diseases come about because of the interaction of many risk factors
-
lots of scientists have made a link between risk factors and probability of getting certain diseases
scientists must look at links to make sure the risk factor is whats causing the disease and not something else altogether
finding the casual mechanism is the way to prove the link

coronary heart disease
coronary heart disease is a non communicable disease which means it cannot be spread between organisms.
coronary arteries become more narrow because of a build up of fatty deposits. This reduces blood flow and leads to a lack of oxygen being suplied to the heart muscle

Human disease
immunity
-
the immune system
if a pathogen passes the non specific defences, the immune system is activated
-
-
medicine
vaccination
-
-
process of vaccination
-
immune system recognition - immune system recognises foreign antigen produce antibodies against them
some of these whiteblood cells called lymphocytes stay in blood as memory cells,
if same pathogen invades again, lymphocytes can produce antibodies faster and produce more antibodies
this means antibody conc stays in blood longer
next time pathogen infects the vaccinated person, the immune system will destroy it before it can cause illness
-
Antibiotics
antibiotics such as penicilin are drugs developed to cure infections caused by bacteria .
Some antibiotics work by destroying cell wall of bacteria so they cant replicate
antibiotics are specific - specific antibiotics are prescibed by medical doctors for diseases
the use of antibiotics has greatly reduced num of deaths form infectious diseases
antibiotics dont affect viruses - antibiotics dont affect viruses because virus stay in the host cell and arent living cells
