Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) - Coggle Diagram
Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)
Uses
strong magnetic field
radio waves
create detailed images of the organs
non-invasive
painless procedure
History
Discovered in 1947
2 physicists
Felix Bloch
Edward mills purcell
1st image obtained in 1977
does not use potentially harmful ionizing radiation
examine the inside of the human body
MRI is used for
Scan Brain and spina cord
Detect tumors
breast cancer screening
abnormalities of the joints
certain types of heart problems
Patients with metals unable to have MRI
shrapnel
bullets
metallic foreign bodies
implants,pacemakers
contrast dye can cause
nausea
headaches
pain or burning at the point of injection
Function
contains two powerful magnets
human body is largely made of water molecules
hydrogen and oxygen atoms
magnet causes the water molecules to align in one direction
second magnetic field is then turned on and off
hydrogen atom to change its alignment
MRI scans vary from 20 to 60 minutes
