The Finkelstein 5
Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah's Purpose
Bring attention to the constant injustice that is the reality of POC's lives
Institutional racism
In the workplace
Emmanuel feels the need to reduce his "Blackness" when applying for a job. They later turn him down when they found they already have "enough diversity" in their workplace.
At school
Even at a young age, Emmanuel realised how disadvantaged he embraced black culture.
Symbolised by the burning of the baggy jeans
The small but constant acts of racism
Being suspected of stealing
Shifiting the pocketbook away from him
Being accused of stealing the stuffed panda
Panda: Black and white. Could this symbolise how society blames POC for the "tension" between POC and white individuals.
Suffering from the actions of other black people, even though Emmanuel had never actively participated in the violence.
Stares from those riding the bus
Incentivise the audience to act against injustice
Demonstrate the need for bipartisan support
Bipartisan support may be the only way the inherently racist foundation that society is built upon, can begin to be uprooted and fixed.
Until the very end of the story, the Naming only involves black people. It is never fruitful. They die without their messages being heard and justice is never brought to the lives of the five children.
