Spiritual Disciplines -- mindmap by Ryan Kliewer
Chapter 1
The purpose of the spiritual disciplines is godliness
Discipline without direction is drudgery.
Spiritual Disciplines are the paths that we can travel down in order to encounter God.
Chapter 2 -- the intake of God's Word
Hearing God's Word
Learn how to read the Scriptures out loud. Read them expressively.
Application -- remember pastor who read Hebrews expressively out loud on Todd Friel's show called "Wretched"
Prepare your heart to hear God's Word
Reading God's Word
Bible Reading Plans
Studying God's Word
The difference between reading God's Word and studying God's Word is having a way to record your thoughts
Chapter 3 -- Bible Intake Part 2
Memorize Scripture
Memorization supplies spiritual power
Memorization strengthens faith
Memorization prepares us for witnessing and counseling
Memorization provides a means of God's guidance
Memorization stimulates meditation
One main reason why we do not get much out of Scripture when we read is the method by which we study the Scriptures.
Meditation
Joshua 1:8
Psalm 1:2-3
Psalm 119:89 -- the psalmist was wiser than his enemies primarily because of his insight into Scripture, not primarily because of the input of Scripture into his mind. The psalmist gained insight because he meditated on the Scriptures.
James 1:25
We forget what we read in the Bible because we fail to meditate.
Methods of meditation
Method #1 -- Emphasize different words in a text
Like turning a diamond to examine different facets
Method #2 -- Rewrite the text in your own words
The need to think of synonyms for words of the text.
Meditation #3 -- Formulate a Principle from the Text -- what does it teach?
Ryan K. -- Good for summarizing the main idea of the passage; good for a homiletical idea for a sermon or a main teaching point for a Sunday school lesson
Meditation #4 -- Think of an illustration of the text -- What picture explains it?
Completes the sentence, "That's like . . ."
Think of an illustration in the news, history, or life
Start with a passage and think, "What Scripture passage illustrates this passage?"
Start with a Scripture passage and think, "What Scripture does this text illustrate?"
For a Scriptural narrative, think of another verse that summarizes the main point of the story.
If the verse is not in the Gospels, does the verse illustrate something that Jesus said or did?
Ryan K. -- these methods of meditation help you to make a sermon or a Bible lesson
Ryan K. -- These methods would really help a person to journal while studying the Scriptures
Ryan K. -- These methods help you identify what you do not currently understand in the Scriptures
Method #5 -- Look for Applications of the Text
Meditating without applying is like chewing food without swallowing. The outcome of meditation should be application.
Method #6 -- Ask how the text points to the Law or the Gospel
Method #7 -- Ask how the text points to something about Jesus
Luke 24:27
Method #8 -- Ask what question is answered or what problem is solved by the text
Method #9 -- Pray through the text
"Praying your way through a verse of Scripture submits the mind to the Holy Spirit’s illumination of the text and intensifies your spiritual perception." -- from Whitney, Donald S.. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life (p. 61). The Navigators. Kindle Edition.
Method #10 -- Memorize the text
Method #11 -- Create an artistic expression of the text
Make a song about the passage to help you to reflect on it.
Method #12 -- Ask the Philippians 4:8 questions of the text
Method #13 -- Ask the Joseph Hall Questions of the text
Method #14 -- Set and discover a minimum number of insights from the text
Method #15 -- Find a link or common thread between all the paragraphs or chapters you read
Method #16 -- Ask how the text speaks to your current issue or question
Method #17 -- Use meditation mapping
Just like mindmapping
Meditate on verses that directly relate to your current circumstances
Chapter 4 -- Prayer
Prayer is expected
Jesus expects us to pray -- Matthew 6
God's Word makes it clear: Colossians 4:2 and 1 Thess. 5:17.
Prayer is learned
By praying
The best way to learn how to pray is to pray.
By meditating on Scripture
George Muller learned to pray by meditating on the Scriptures
By praying with others
By reading about prayer
Prayer is answered
We learn to pray by believing that God will answer prayer.
Chapter 5 -- Worship
Worship is focusing on and responding to God
In order to worship God biblically, He must be at the center of our focus at a given time.
