Booking window - a lot of popular mountaineering trips are expected to fill up early.
Covid restrictions - Is this a 2021 or 2022+ trip?
For me:
Pretty chill for the rest of the winter – lists of trails I want to run or cross country ski.
Spring: Regional travel and races I can drive to. Really want to get down and run an ultra in Texas with Sanami and I'm also looking at doing another Grand Canyon R2R2R.
Summer: More regional backpacking, regional races, maybe a 14er.
Fall: Maybe an international trip - make it somewhere that's easy to get to and doesn't require red tape so I can delay my preparations and cancel easily.
Group trips into an adventure season
Maybe 2022 is going to be for spring A trips and 2023 is going to be for winter A trips
Try to take an off season every year. Fine to have a high baseline, but don't live your whole life like you're about to climb a huge mountain. Not possible and certainly not good for your body or mind. (my horror season with 10 months of hard training)
Use off-season for cultural trips (Kazakhstan and Kamchatka)

This would be a good for training, but it's not a high priority for me.
I'm not real attached to the outcome. It's OK if I don't see the summit, reach the lake, get a good time in the race, check another 14er off my list.
Also good for trips other people really want you to go on that don't really fill you with joy.

We all have more trips than we could ever do in a lifetime floating around in our hears. So this step is important!

We like to believe we're in control, but we're actually not in control of shit. So consider 2021 an exercise in releasing control.

Get good travel insurance – might be a good use case for insurance where you can cancel for any reason. (World Nomads)
Have a plan B: if my Mt. Rainier trip gets canceled, and I'm already trained up, I will X instead.
