Periods of Development
c) Middle & late childhood (elementary school years)
- from about 6 – 11 years of age
- Fundamental skills of reading, writing, and math
- Self-control increases
d) Adolescence
- the transition from childhood to adulthood
- Begins around 10-12, and ends around 18-21
- Starts with rapid physical changes
- pursue independence & seek their own identity
- thought becomes more abstract, logical, and idealistic
b) Early childhood/preschool years
- from the end of infancy to about 5 years
- More self-sufficient, develop school readiness skills
a) Infancy
- from birth to 18-24 months
- Extreme dependence on adults
- many beginning activities- language development, symbolic thought, sensorimotor coordination, social learning
