Utilizing an ESP approach with the ELP teacher acting as interface and mediator between the legal professionals (law lecturers)
A substantial body of data was collected from these courses over a six year period,
including a video corpus comprising 15 h of legal concepts seminars from one of the
final courses.
This article has focused on an inter-disciplinary approach to ELP education for a very specific purpose, enabling legal translation and revision teams to develop both their legal understanding and their language skills in order to translate EC legislation and produceoperative legal texts in the target language.
For example, in the chapter 3 of Anthony's An Introduction to English for Specific Purpose page 42
If you were sent to a calling company to offer English courses, what information would you try to gather about the call centre staff? How do you get a description of call center English? What materials and teaching strategies can you use to help employees improve their language skills? How will you measure success after the course is completed?
Needs ---What can they already do in English ? What new language skills will they require ? What do they see as strengths and weakness in their English ability ?
Learning objectives--- What language skills are used in the call-center
industry? What are reasonable goals for a three-day course? What sequence
should be used to introduce the target language skills?
Evaluation: how will you know if the learners have achieved the goals of the course? How can you assess your own performance and the course as a whole?
Materials and methods : Is there a readily available textbook that you can use? Will you need to prepare handouts? What
individual, pair work, and group activities should you employ?
