- - - - The typical harquebusier would have an iron cuirass with a breast and backplate, and an open faced helmet such as a lobster-tailed pot; the fashion conscious could replace the helmet with a broad-brimmed felt hat, often worn over a concealed iron skullcap or secrete. In England, in 1629, a harquebusier's armour cost one pound and six shillings, that of a cuirassier four pounds and ten shillings. A more wealthy harquebusier may have worn a buff coat (the finest quality buff coats were often more expensive than an iron cuirass) under his armour and a metal gauntlet to protect his bridle hand and forearm.Also worn were tall, cuff-topped riding boots; these reached the thigh and were often also of buff leather. Munition-quality armour at this time was usually of iron, sometimes containing small amounts of phosphorus; this addition gave a minimal increase in hardness. Officers and other wealthy men would have had access to steel armour, which was carefully heat treated to harden it
      - The harquebusier would usually have been armed with a carbine, wheellock, snaphaunce or doglock flintlock, hung from a swivel attached to a baldric, pistols in saddle holsters, and a stout, straight-bladed, sword. The 'dog' of the doglock was a type of safety-catch, very useful to prevent the unintentional firing of the carbine when on horseback. Records also indicate that some harquebusiers were also armed with a horseman's poleaxe or pick, these were hafted weapons with axe or hammer heads and armour-piercing spikes.

The cavalry regiments, which on the other hand remain under the authority of a colonel general , are commanded individually by camp masters until the Revolution. Like that of captain , the charge of camp master is cash, that is to say, purchasable and freely transferable. In fact, rich families owned their regiment and helped finance it. It was very expensive but very prestigious. As a result, children of the high nobility could advance to the rank at a very early age and thus be in a good position to obtain seniority promotions to the rank of brigadier

    - - Major "Sergeant-Major"
        
        In the 16th century Spain "Sergeant major" was a general officer. He commanded an army's infantry, and ranked about third in the army's command structure; he also acted as a sort of chief of staff to the army's commander. In the 17th century, sergeant majors appeared in individual regiments. These were field officers, third in command of their regiments (after their colonels and lieutenant colonels), with a role similar to the older, army-level sergeant majors (although obviously on a smaller scale). The older position became known as "sergeant major general" to distinguish it. Over time, the term sergeant was dropped from both titles, giving rise to the modern ranks of major and major general.

Like the colonels, the lieutenant-colonels were also captains of a company of their regiment whose real command was ensured by a captain-lieutenant . The cavalry regiments had lieutenant-colonels, although they were not commanded by colonels but by camp masters .
