Karana and Ramo saw a ship on the horizon, which they though was a gull with folded wings.
Kara and Ramo were at the Coral Cove digging roots for food.
The men of Ghalas-at, led by Chief Chowig, went to the Coral Cove to meet the strangers.
Captain Orlov introduced himself and told the Chief that they were there for peace.
Chief Chowig revealed to the Aleuts his secret name
This surprised Karana because they do not just give their secret name believing it would lose its magic
The Captain revealed that they want to hunt for otter in exchange for beads
MAIN EVENTS, Ch2
The Aleuts camped by the Coral Cove.
Karana give more details about the island.
It is mostly windy in the Island of the Blue Dolphins.
Ulape noticed that there is a girl Aleut dressed like a man.
Ulape discovered a school fo white bass on the shore
The Aleuts learnt about the "good fortune" of the people of Ghalas-at
Two Aleut men went to the village asking for some white bass.
Chief Chowig declined.
Karana foreshadowed the trouble her people would face because of this
Chief Chowig warned his people not to befriend the Aleuts because they do not know the meaning of it.
MAIN EVENTS, Ch3
Karana speaks of how the otter may look like a seal
Karana and the people of Ghalas-at observed how the Aluets hunt.
Karana said the water of the sea turned red because of otter blood
This made her angry because to her the otter are her friends.
She told her father her fear that the otter is completely gone
Her father comforted her by saying that they will come back soon when the Aleuts leave.
In two days, the Chief started to send young men to sleep by the shore to watch over the Aleuts to make sure they will not leave before they give the payment of the otter pelts.
The chapter closed with the narrator questioning if the Aleuts will really pay their dues
She also revealed how her people were working on his new spear.
