Lesson 4: Newton's Universal Laws of Gravitation
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation
Every body in the universe attracts every other body with a force that is directly proportional to the product of the masses of the bodies and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the bodies.
Greater the masses = greater the force of attraction
Gravitational Field Strength of Earth
The force of gravity of a mass on earth the mass of the object is multiplied by the gravitational filed strength.
Orbiting Satellites
Speed of a Satellite:
Weightlessness
True weightlessness cannot be achieved but apparent weightlessness can be achieved when there is zero force from supporting structures.
This sensation occurs when the supporting structure and the object have the same acceleration.
Gravitational Potential Energy
Escape Velocity
the velocity needed to escape a planet’s gravitational pull.
