The First and Second Decemvirate
the creation
the tribunes realised that Terentilius' demands would not be met
in 454, the newly-elected tribunes agreed to drop terentilius' demands if the plebeians could help select the lawgivers. the senate agreed
inspired by the athenian democracy, in 452 the senate created the decemvirate, a council of ten men to create a new law code
the decemvirate replaced the tribunes and consuls
its members came from the patrician class
the first
the decemvirate of 451 was described by livy as 'just' and 'fair'
Appius Claudius Crassus, the grandson of Appius Claudius helped create the first Ten Tables of Laws
he became the hero of the plebs, but was actually deceiving the poor to become a tyrant
the laws were published, and the roman people wanted two more tables
it was agreed that ten more men would be chosen to complete the tables
the second
Appius Claudius Crassus was put in charge of the selection process for the next ten men
he appointed himself and nine allies - livy describes them as the 'Ten Tarquins'
this new decemvirate met in secret and appointed twelve lictors each to act as bodyguards
the next two tables of laws served only to protect the patricians. por ejemplo, a law banning inter-marriage between plebeians and patricians
More tyranny
when a sabine army attacked a roman colony and the Aequi attacked Algidus, the decemvirate called a meeting of the senate to assemble an army
no senators came, and the plebeians refused to enlist
crassus used his lictors to force a quorum of senators to attend
Valerius and Horatius accused the decemvirate of acting like kings and said they would share the same fate as Superbus
the senate voted for an army which suffered many heavy defeats
Virginia
crassus lusted after a plebeian girl named virginia
crassus asked his client to accuse her of being a runaway slave so that he could put her on trial
virginia's fiance told the crowd that Crassus wanted to rape virginia and the crowd turned against him
at the trial, virginia demanded to contact her father Verginius
her fiance told her father verginius what was happening
on the next day of the trial, crassus declared virginia a slave and verginius a traitor
to save his daughter, verginius seized a knife from a butcher and ran to his daughter
''i am preserving your freedom and liberty in the only way i can'' Livy
he killed his daughter and escaped from rome
Valerius and Horatius demanded the senate recall the tribunes and consuls but they refused
