HOW TO CREATE AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS

  1. Identify the standards - statements what students should know and able to do.

  2. Select an authentic task- find a way students can demonstrate that they are fully capable of meeting the standard.

  3. Identify the criteria for the task - indicators of good performance on a task

  4. Create the rubric - a scoring key

Performance Assessment

✅ student self-reflection and self-evaluation

the systematic collection of learner work (such as written assignments, drafts, artwork, and presentations) that represents competencies, exemplary work, or the learner's developmental progress.

Types of Portfolio

Documentation - collection of work over time showing growth and improvement reflecting students learning of identified outcomes

Process - demonstrates all facets or phrases of the learning process

Peer Assessment

To encourage collaborative learning and swapping ideas. This helps the students develop a number of critical skills. The learning process is enhanced and students gain a sophisticated grasp of the learning objectives.

involves students in the assessment process, with them taking on the role of teacher by reviewing work of other students against a set criteria.

To provide students with an overview of things to be considered by teachers when marking work. Because of this they can better understand the academic requirements. Students who assess work of their peers learn more effectively.

Self assessment

Online assessment

Self-assessment provides students with an opportunity to self-evaluate, or make judgments about their learning process and products of learning, based on criteria that they have agreed on with their instructor.

Before implementing peer /self assessment, consider the following

  1. Have a clear assessment criteria
  2. Develop the assessment criteria with students
  3. Use anonymous examples of work
  4. Vary the work they assess
  5. Model responses
  6. Allow time to respond
  7. Provide feedback on their peer/self-assessments
  • to support students to regulate their own learning by requiring them to monitor how they are working

  • encouraging them to modify their approach if something is not working

  • enhance students' self efficacy and support ownership of learning

the process used to measure certain aspects of information for a set purpose where the assessment is delivered via a computer connected to a network

  • to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the student

Characteristics

  • learner centered
  • encourage self reflection
  • include rubrics for discussion / assignments/ collaboration
  • contextual and aligned to learning outcomes
