TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS :
1.COMBINATION REACTIONS: A combination reaction is in which simpler substances are combined into a more complex compound. Combination reactions are also called synthesis reactions.
1.The reaction of a metal with oxygen: Magnesium metal reacts with oxygen to produces magnesium oxide. 2Mg(s)+O2(g)-----2MgO(s) 2.The reaction of a nonmetal with ozygen: Sulfur reacts with oxygen to produce sulfur dioxide gas. S(s)+O2(g)-----SO2(g) 3.The reaction of a metal and a nonmetal:
Lithium reacts with bromine gas to produce lithium bromide.
2Li(s)+Br2(g)-----2LiBr(s)
2.DECOMPOSITION REACTIONS:
In a decomposition reaction, a single compound is broken down into two or more simpler substances. Heat is usually required to start a decomposition reaction.
Examples:
Ni(HCO3)2(s)-----NiCO3(s)+H2O(/)+CO2(g) 2. CaCO3(s)-----CaO(s)+CO2(g)
2NaN3(s)-----2Na(s)+3N2(g)
3.SINGLE-REPLACEMENT REACTIONS:
A single-replacement reaction is a reaction in which a more active metal displaces another less active metal in a compound.
Examples:
Fe(s)+2HCl(aq)-----FeCl2(aq)+H2(g) 2. 2Na(s)+2H2O(/)-----2NaOH(aq)+H2(g) 3. Ca(s)+2H2O(/)-----Ca(OH)2(aq)+H2(g)
4.DOUBLE-REPLACEMENT REACTIONS: In a double-replacement reation, two ionic compounds in aqueous solutuion switch anions and produce an insoluble substance.
Examples:
BaCl1(aq)+K2CrO4(aq)-----BaCrO4(s)+2KCl(aq) 2. NaCl(aq)+LiNO3(aq)-----NaNO3(aq)+LiCl(aq)
3.KNO3+AlCl3-----Al(NO3)3+KCl
5.NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS:
A neutralization reaction is the reaction of an acid and a base. A neutralization reaction produces a salt and water.
Examples:
NH3+HCl-----NH4Cl
H+OH-----H2O
H2SO4(aq)+2KOH(aq)-----K2SO4(aq)+2H2O(/)
6.COMBUSTION REACTIONS:
In a combustion reaction, carbon containing compounds, fuel burns in oxygen from the air to produce carbon dioxide, CO2, water, H2O, and heat or flame.
Examples: 1. CH4(g)+2O2(g)-----CO2(g)+2H2O(g)+energy
2Fe+3/2O2-----Fe2O3
3.C2H6O+3O2-----2CO2+3H2O
