Classical Liberalism Ideas: Positive or Negative?
Natural Rights Theorists
Dates: 1660s-1790s
Ideas/ Beliefs: Minimal state to ensure protection of God given natural rights.
Key Thinkers: Locke and Jefferson
My view:
I agree with some of what they say, I think that there needs to be some sort of order to ensure the protection of our rights, for the meanwhile, until the state can be withered away.
Economic Liberalism
Dates
1760s-1930s
Key Thinkers
Adam Smith, David Ricardo
Ideas/ Beliefs
Anti Mercantilism, Pro free market, Laissez Faire
My view
I think that given the state of the world we live in, with such a vast and unfair wealth gap, the free market just makes inequality of living standards worse.
Further, the Laissez Faire doctrine contributed to the WSC, and then made the GD worse.
Neoliberalism
Dates: 1960 to present
Beliefs
Thinkers: Thatcher
My view
Social Darwinism
Dates: 1860s-1910s
Thinkers: Sammuel Smiles (self help) , Richard Cobden (Look not to govt), Herbert Spence (Darwin)
Ideas: Those that work hard will achieve
My view
Harsh, Unrealistic and Unfair. Those from poor backgrounds are less likely to succeed because they havent had the same head starts/ cultural capital (connections etc)
Utilitarianism
Dates:1770s-1830s
Ideas/Beliefs: Maximising happiness is the right thing to do, so instituions can be judged by their ability to maximise utility.
Key Thinkers: Bentham and Mill (James and John S)
My View
Definitions:
Claims: Something you feel you should be entitled to
Rights: An entitlement to something
Natural Rights: Human Rights, God given
