Conservative Party

Origins

Early 19th Century - became suspicious French revolution and the doctrines associated (Eg. Freedom and equality) and saw them as a danger.

Since 1900 the Conservatives have been in power for 75 years (including coalition governments.)

Tradititional Conservatism

One-Nation Conservatism

Trace back to the 17th Century when an aristocratic grouping came together to defend the historic privileges of the Crown and Church of England.

Dedicated to the defence of property and traditional authority against the threat of revolution

Associated with Benjamin Disraeli who wrote a book debating the growing division between rich and poor in the mid 19th Century.

This philosophy sought to bridge the gap between the classes, act benevolently towards the disadvantaged in return for their acceptance to rule.
