How did the Indigenous Australians view the land they lived on?
The Indigenous Australian’s perspective was that the land owned them.
How did the British view the land they decided to settle upon?
The British claimed that they owned the land although there were obvious signs of inhabitants living upon Australia.
What does the term 'assimilation' mean in relation to the Indigenous Australians?
As the Europeans arrived they anticipated that the British culture would be absorbed into the Aboriginal people.
Originally how were the British ordered to treat the Indigenous Australians?
Originally Governor Phillip decided to treat the Aboriginal people with kindness to avoid unnecessary conflict with the Indigenous Australians.
What was a reason Britain chose to colonise Australia?
Britain wanted to prevent France, or any other European country from colonising Australia first, this was part of the reason as to why they colonised Australia.
They also needed space for prisoners due to the Industrial Revolution, Australia was seen as an ideal place for this.
Did the British introduce animals etc. into Australia?
The British took to presenting new animals into Australia, clearing land, confining admission and they also constructed fences.
What was the assimilation policy?
Assimilation policies were introduced and in 1937 one of which was created for Aboriginal people who were ‘not of full blood’. It stated that these Indigenous Australians should be immersed into the broader populace
Did the British and the Indigenous Australians ever work together?
Yes at certain times they did, for example, Governor Phillip and Bennelong collaborated as Bennelong attempted to bring Aboriginal people into the settlement.
What exactly was the Stolen Generation?
Indigenous children were taken away from their families. When taken, these children were taught to discard their Indigenous culture and customs, and were obligated to absorb and implement white culture into their lives.
What were missions and protectorates?
Missions and protectorates aimed to keep the Indigenous Australians distant from the European societies whilst they were taught the English language and customs. This once again brought up the idea of assimilation.
What was James Cook ordered to do when exploring Australia?
He had been instructed to explore both the area and people within. His findings were generally good but he and many others disregarded the fact that the people living on the land had any claim to the land.
