A big picture, shows the key activities to be engaged in a day
Overall balance, pace, variety, routines
Short and long segments, active and quiet periods, self-directed and teacher-directed activities, time spent indoors and outdoors, large group and small group activities
Determined by overall schedule of events, teacher decides who is to set the pace, teacher's supervision is necessary on disengaged, distracted, or otherwise uninvolved children
Achieved through size, purpose, interest, composition (skills) and duration taken, groups are formed based on the observed needs of children or a balance between more or less skillful children or, by chance (friendship)
Must be taught, modeled, and practiced consistently, most are taught at the beginning of the year, should have a rationale, introduce few at a time
Routines, transitions, schedule, expectations
Provides sense of security, helps to understand expectations, develops sense of mastery in handling situations, encourages engagement in activities, develops self discipline
Visual cues, prompts, songs, counting, assigning tasks, or make your own
Examine the need for each rule, select the appropriate ones, select the consequences, teach the rules, obtain a commitment from children, periodically review
short, clear, explicit and stated positively, general yet important, implemented from the first day, involving children in creating the rules
