Energy Demand
**The demand for energy has increased rapidly over the years,
Energy Mix
How is this changing?
Why is our energy mix changing?
Impact of energy exploitation
Nuclear
What are the environmental and economic impacts?
Wind Farms
Wind farming uses the kinetic energy from the wind to be turned into energy. They are effective and environmental friendly as they make no smoke, cost little and do not take up much space.
Fracking
Fracking is when liquid is injected at a high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes etc. so a to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.
Fracking is bad because it is using up all of the local towns water to put into the ground, which is causing the people who live there diseases due to a deficiency in water. It also puts dangerous gases into the air, chocking the local residents and giving them life long lung problems.
Water
Water transfer
Where is water moved from and to?
Water on the surface of spongy and palisade cells (inside the leaf) evaporates and then diffuses out of the leaf. This is called transpiration.
Will this change in the future?
Water suppliers are being encouraged to consider projects reminiscent of the Romans or Victorians as they prepare to cope with growing demand
Water Quality
How do we improve water quality?
Six easy ways to improve water quality. Sweep grass clippings and rake leaves from the street and storm drain. Clean up spilled fertilizer, oil, and other chemicals and dispose of properly.
What threatens our water quality?
Blue Water Baltimore is actively working with citizens and local authorities to prevent and remedy four major sources of water pollution
Water demand
What are the main users of our water?
Texas accounted for about 7 percent of total withdrawals for all categories, predominantly for thermoelectric power, irrigation, and public supply.
How is demand changing and why
The UK government wants to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions. It also wants to increase the amount of energy which comes from renewable sources.
Water Supply
What are the sources of our water?
There are two main sources of water: surface water and groundwater. Surface Water is found in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. Groundwater lies under the surface of the land, where it travels through and fills openings in the rocks.
What is the pattern of water supply and demand?
Global water supplies are not evenly distributed. Some places have a water surplus, whereas others have a water deficit.
What are the impacts?
massive engineering projects that divert water from rivers with perceived surpluses to those with shortages — have been promoted as a solution.
Food
Changes in UK Agriculture
Agribusiness
What is this?
How does impact food supplies & cost
Organic foods
Demand
How is demand changing?
With increase in population the demand for food has also increased to feed everyone, which then depletes the amount of food we have as a whole.
Imported food
How much do we import?
What are the impacts?
Africa supplied 5%, Asia, North and South America all provided a 4% share of the food consumed in the UK.
Food miles. Humans must also consider the impact of their food production on the environment. In order to supply cheap produce all year round, many supermarkets import food from other countries around the world - where it is cheaper to produce or grows more plentifully.
