Overview: The 3 Lit Reviews
1st literature review

Deliberate practice
Dating
intuition
Dating conceptualised as a problem
Dating intuition as a result of practice
Dating as something where "intuition" is needed
Dual processing theory
Intuition and expertise as a problem
Expert Perception
Emotional attunement
Deliberate practice
Pickup material on dating intuition
Dating
pickup community and dating
Ethics of dating: "sexual conquest or a desire for connections?" - defend dating e.g. grazian/casanova complex
Expertise
My approach: (1) expertise is a problem (2) the accumulation of knowledge
Accumulation of skills/knowledge through practice
Deliberate practice and the developmental years primer
It's a broad field (chase & simon etc; drefyus)
Development of intuition
Theoretical framework
1st lit review. Aim: present a conceptual framework. Establish the argument that dating is a form of expertise: a skilled process in which performers solve problems. The debate has not been holistic enough. SST is similar to Deliberate Practice. Appreciating that dating is a form of expertise that might be improved through deliberate practice opens up our conceptual appreciations and offers opportunities. Expertise research fills the gap.
What are the research questions?
What is the theoretical framework?
Understanding dating
Can we talk about dating as a form of expertise? Is it as trainable as other skills?
I argue, yes as it is a trainable skill, although until now we do not have the evidence
What is deliberate practice?
Innate ability or practice
Dating
necessary but not sufficient
Overcoming constraints
The developmental years
The 4 facets
Developing mental representations
The link with intuition
What sort of practice works to improve people: social skills training
Can you be a natural at dating?
The link between deliberate practice and intuition
Growth mindset
Why important: The social implications of not being good at dating, e.g singletons
Is dating a natural skill or can it be learnt?
Accumulation of mental representations
It is wrong and damaging to believe that it is not a trainable skill. Expertise research fills the gap.
Intuition.
Establish the argument that dating is a domain where system 1 responding is especially required; deliberation less so (except default-interventionist); selective search and linking patterns to actions (e.g., chunks/scripts) is essential
creativity
Is expertise a result of practice or talent?
Dating. Aim to establish that dating is a skill. To look at what the literature tells us about whether dating is learnable. To understand why being attractive might be a skill. To discuss the pickup community.
What is dating? What is dating initiation?
Intro: dating is a skill a form of expertise
Dating is a skill: using theories about attraction what would we argue they need to present/do
Social skills training - learn behaviours, scripts, breaking the ice etc
evolutionary - present high/appropriate mate value
social exchange theory - present desired qualities
Biologically and neurologically inspired: make one self likeable/attractive by hijacking the emotional/cognitive attachment system http://www.dana.org/Cerebrum/Default.aspx?id=39351 AND https://www.livescience.com/24593-brain-love-dating-decisions.html
Courtship models (e.g. Davis) go through the process correctly - from approaching to more
Dating and intuition e.g. recognising cues - verbal and non-verbal
Other social psychology theories of attraction: e.g, halo effect (attractiveness, Berschield and Walster), similarity, pickup lines, small gestures (e.g. smiling, compliments)
Mating intelligence
Anxiety, shyness, and dating
Anxiety, confidence, self-efficacy and how it interacts with success
skills to accomplish
touching
asking for a date an anxiety
pickup lines
flirting
small gestures (e.g. smiling, compilments)
verbal and non verbal behaviours
holism vs gestaultism
how do you and how long does it take to develop dating skills?
social skills training is very similar to deliberate practice
overcoming constraints in three developmental domains table
The 4 facets of DP in three developmental domains table (chess, clinical skills training, pickup)
Intuition in 2 domains compared in table (chess v dating)
