Muscles of Gluteal Region
Common Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus minimus
I: Anterior surface of greater trochanter of femur
A: Abduct and medially rotate thigh
O: External surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Tensor fasciae latae
I: Iliotibial tract, which attaches to lateral condyle of tibia
A: Abduct and medially rotate thigh
O: ASIS; anterior part of iliac crest
Gluteues medius
I: Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
A: Abduct and medially rotate thigh
O: External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Inferior gluteal nerve Innervation
Gluteus Maximus
I: Most fibers end in iliotibial tract, which inserts into lateral condyle of tibia; some fibers insert on gluteal tuberosity
A: Extends thigh (especially from flexed position) and assists in lateral rotation
O: Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament
Common Action: Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Obturator Internus
I: Medial surface of greater trochanter
Inn: Nerve to obturator internus
O: Pelvic surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones
Superior and Inferior Gemelli
O: Inferior: ischial tuberosity
I: Medial surface of greater trochanter of femur
O: Superior: ischial spine
Inn: Superior gemellus same nerve supply as obturator internus
Inn: Inferior gemellus: same nerve supply as quadratus femoris
Piriformis
I: Superior border of greater trochanter of femur
Inn: Branches of anterior rami of S1 and S2
O: Anterior surface of sacrum; sacrotuberous ligament
Nerve to quadratus femoris Innervation
Quadratus Femoris
I: Quadrate tubercle on intertrochanteric crest of femur and area inferior to it
A: laterally rotates thigh
O: Lateral border of ischial tuberosity
