- - - - When creators decide to avoid or twist an incredibly common technique, we can say the the creator has 'subverted' audience expectations. Importantly this only happens when most of the story fits the audience expectations. We can't say that The Cabin in the Woods subverts audience expectations about romance because it is clearly a horror film. We can say that it subverts expectations about horror because most of the film is a very cliched horror film, but a few scenes carefully suggest to the audience that there is something more to it. Romeo and Juliet generally fits the expectations of a romantic story. Many romantic stories feature moments of sadness to heighten the romance (see The Notebook, The Fault in Our Stars and Moulin Rouge). What makes Romeo and Juliet unique is that the beginning tells you very clearly that these lovebirds are going to die and that the story gives you no one you can easily hate.
- - - - Some people like to think they only have certain traits inside them and are incapable of the opposite. Sometimes, we like to think somebody is only capable of certain traits and not their opposite. Duality is the idea that these assumptions are wrong. People obsessed with love can also experience great hate (Romeo). People who strive to be rational and logical can also be emotional (Juliet). Even people who claim to not let any emotions or idea likes love or honour rule them can find themselves driven by them (Mercutio, who dies defended the honour of his friend who he loves, maybe in more ways than one). Shakespeare paints a grim ending for every character who think they have full control over their traits/desires.

    - - Young, very capable fighter. Sees himself as a peace-keeper. Trying to cheer up Romeo

    - - Loves fashion and fighting. Speaks with a unnecessary fancy (even for shakespeare) and really hates Montagues (but loves trying to murder them)
      - One of the characters people consider villains of the play. He is vain, violent and prideful. He has all the traits common in 'bad guys' that the heroes defeat at the story's climax. However, he dies in act 3 of a 5 act play. In a more predictable play, he would fight Romeo at the end. Shakespeare doesn't like being predictable.
    - - He has villainous traits. Many want to think he is the villain of the play. However, the ending of the play requires him to live, learn and be one of the two creators in the lasting peace (the only long-term benefit of Romeo and Juliet's love). It should also be noted that while acts horribly to Juliet, he is completely unaware that she is married and in love. Juliet doesn't tell him out of fear, but we can't actually be sure he would have killed Romeo on sight. He likely would after Tybalt's death, but he spoke of peace before this event.

      - A priest who has knowledge of magic potions and plans a hidden wedding in an attempt to manipulate politics. He also lies straight to Paris' face about the woman he loves and lies straight to Capulet's face about his daughter's death. He is a hypocrite. Normally, hypocritical, lying, deceptive and maybe satanical priests are bad guys. Shakespeare doesn't let the audience see him this way.
