The Conscious, Preconscious and Unconscious
Preconscious
- Not always aware of it = only aware when we access it
- Can unintentionally come into conscious in FREUDIAN SLIP = slip of the tongue
Unconscious
- Not aware of it = can't access
- Memories and thoughts that are too painful = controls and holds
Conscious
- Aware of it = responsible for actions
- About thoughts and feelings and what you're currently experiencing
ID, Ego and Superego
Ego
Develops around 18 months old = Achieves goals/balances demands of ID with demands of Superego, to make rational decisions = REALITY PRINCIPLE
Superego
Develops around the age of 4 = Our conscience/aims to do whats right - "shoulds" and shouldn'ts" = MORALITY PRINCIPLE
-
ID, Ego and Superego within Aggression
Ego
Can't rationalise what ID wants/becomes aggressive in order to get ID what it wants/inbalance with Superego
Superego
Reacts to aggression e.g if someone has treated you bad/if Ego gives into ID, Superego becomes frustrated/confusion when developing
ID
If needs are not met, ID becomes frustrated and gets aggressive/doesn't know difference between right and wrong = no morals
