About Driving :check:
Towing
- no more than 4m between vehicle and trailer

Safe Parking Rules for Heavy Vehicles
Must display a rear-facing red light

Do's and Donts
- Do's
- check load space is suitable for load type
- adequate anchors
- enough lashings in good strong condition
- tighten lashings or restraints
- front of load is right against front rack or head board
- loose bulk loads cannot fall or blow of vehicle
- Don'ts
- overload vehicle or individual axels
- load too high
- use rope hooks to restrain heavy loads
- forget size, nature and position of load will affect handling
- forget to check load
- before moving
- after travelling 25km and periodically after that
- everytime you remove or add to the load
- after emergency braking or sharp excessive turning
- task risks
- move the vehicle if any of the load is not secure properly
- leave anything loose on the deck after unloading
The Safety ProblemRestraint for loads usually made up of a combination of:
- Lashings secured to the vehicles anchor points
- Baulking arrangments incl racks, headboards, stakes in pockets, transverse beams, shoring bars, chocks and dunnage, etc
- Friction between the load and the vehicle platform
Methods of Load Restraint
- When stopping forward movement restraints must be at least equal to the load weight
- When stopping backward movement restraints must be at least half the weight of the load
- When cornering the load will move sideways and the restraints must be at least half the weight of the load
- When travel on bumpy roads vertical restraints holding the load down must be at least one-fifth the weight of the load :
Rigid Loads over 0.5T or more
- Packets on a vehicle platform must be secured side to side
- Packets not loaded against a headboard must have securing device (lashing, chain etc) strength at least twice (combined) of the load
- Packets loaded against a headboard supported by 150mm need securing strength combined of at least the weight of the load
- Packets lower but supported and the upper packets not supported must have securing strength combined of at least 1.5 times the weight of the load
Load Distribution and Arrangement
- Loads should be spread to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible Large and heavier items place at the bottom
- Height of the load should not exceed the length of the load

Safe Speed Guidelines
You must ensure
- don't drive faster than 90km/h (limit for all heavy vehicles)
- speed is safe for traffic, road and weather conditions
- can stop suddenly
- stop in half the length of clear road ahead

- pull over when safe to let vehicles pass
