I think the most significant event for changing Ideology in the twentieth century, globally, was the Russian Revolution. Thatcher's having pushed the mainstream political beliefs of UK citizens further towards right wing ideologies, resulted in the Labour party being forced to move from left of centre, to a centrist, or even arguably right of centre position. This, domestically, was probably the most significant event. Despite this, I would still argue that the Russian revolution ( RR) was more significant, due to it's irrevesable international impact. After the events of the RR, Socialism and Communism,as ideologies, became demonised across the world - with countries such as the US still using "socialist" as a dirty word in politics. Given that socialism is merely an alternate system to capitalism, this shift resulted in largescale hardline defense of capitalism, and as such the status quo. #
