CODES AND STANDARDS

Definitions:
Competence:
The combination of skills, knowledge, attitudes, values and abilities that underpin effective and/or superior performance in a profession/occupational area
Competent:
The person has competence across all of the domains of competencies applicable to the nurse, at a level that is judged to be appropriate for the level of nurse being addressed.
Code for Practice:
A set of standards for conduct and good practice by the registered nurse.
Code of professional conduct:
Sets out the legal requirements, professional behaviour and conduct expectations for all nurses, in all practice settings, in Australia.
It's the principles of professional behaviour that guide safe practice and clearly outlines the conduct expected of nurses by their colleagues and the broader community.
Standards importance:
Having professional staff work within the standards and codes results in:
the delivery of safe, competent, responsible, knowledgeable nursing care
ongoing professional develop,emt of staff ensures up to date knowledge and skills based on the principles of best practice
increase in public safety by reducing the possibility of errors
The national standards for the registered nurse are the core standards by which your performance in assessed to obtain and retain your registration as a registered nurse in Australia
These standards provide you with the framework for assessing your competence as a RN
Why work within the codes and standards?
RNs need to demonstrate they have the skills, knowledge and attitude to perform their duties as a professional
Staff are current in their skills, knowledge and abilities
Nurses are respectful and ethical in all their dealings
An example of what may happen:
Nurses may come back to work after 10 years of not working and they don't have experience with any new equipment
Staff can speak to patients however they want, dress however they want, be late, answer their phone whilst with a patient
Standards for practice:
RN practice, as a professional endeavour, requires continuous thinking and analysis in the context of thoughtful development and maintenance of constructive relationships
To engage in this work, RNs need to continue to develop professionally and maintain their capability for professional practice
RNs determine, coordinate and provide safe, quality nursing
As part of practice, RNs are responsible and accountable for supervision and the delegation of nursing activity around enrolled nurses
Seven standards for practice:
Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice
Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
Maintains capability for practice
Comprehensively conducts assessments
Develops a plan for nursing practice
Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice
Evaluates outcomes to inform nursing practice
Code of ethics
Importance:
Identify the fundamental ethical standards and values to which the nursing profession is committed and are incorporated in other professional nursing guidelines and standards of conduct
Provide nurses with a reference point from which to reflect on the conduct of themselves and others
Guide ethical, decision making practice
1 - Nurses and people
Nurses share the importance of initiating and supporting action to meet the health and social needs of the public, particularly those vulnerable
Nurses advocate for equity and social justice in resource allocation
Nurse demonstrates professional values (respect, compassion...)
2 - Nurses and practice
Nurses take personal responsibility and accountability
Nurses maintain personal health so that care provided is not compromised
Nurses use judgement when accepting and delegating responsibility
Nurses maintain standards of personal conduct to reflect the profession
Ensure the use of technology is comparable with the safety of individuals
Foster and maintain practice promoting ethical behaviour and TRs
3 - Nurses and the profession
The nurse is active in their profession and is always looking out for errors in practice, reflecting on situations and developing self-awareness
They participate in creating a safe, equitable , social practice environment
STANDARDS:
Complete 20 hours of continuing professional development each year
Recency of practice (evidence you have practiced at least 450 hours in a 5 year period)
