Modernism: :pen:
a style or movement in the arts that aims to break with classical and traditional forms.
The Rise of Woman
Gertrude Stein Stein was a openly queer writer in the 1920's. Her and her wife Alice Toklas made advances in modernism by producing writings that were near nonsense but keeping an overarching theme; meaningless words were impossible.
Alice B. Toklas
Picasso and Stein had a very close friendship. They both created works about each other. Picasso's portrait of her was inspired by African masks and he was able to incorporate this into her face in her portrait.
Tender Buttons is a book written by Stein in 1914. Tender Buttons is very hard to read because often it seems to be just general nonsense words mushed together. However, one things is consistent throughout; a sense of domesticity and the everyday life. Much of the books sections and titles are domestic things like Objects, Food, and Rooms. This also sort of brings a boring tone about life but a marvel at domestic living. But this way of living for a queer couple can be something not to take advantage of because often time, homosexuality can be a not so peaceful life.
Domesticity
T.S Eliot was a writer and novelist and was of the most renowned poets of his time. Much of his work was made the basis of poetry and his work was the standard.

The Waste Land is one of Eliot's most famous works. There is a theme to Eliot's work and that is a sense of an everyday schedule. A drowsiness to doing the same thing everyday. There is a sense of wasting your life and not being able to do anything about it, because what's the point?
Breakdown of Racism
Langston Hughs Hughs was an american novelist and poet. His most important works was during the times of modernization in the Harlem Renaissance. Throughout his works, he brings a sort of frustration to the movement; a frustration where there is little notice in the black community.
The Negro Speaks of Rivers is a poem that reaches into a primal sense of belonging. It speaks of the rivers of Africa and recalls these moments as a connection to Hugh's African roots. It brings up a sense of pride and love for who he is. There is also a sort of sadness to it. Where it's more of a nostalgic memory and not exciting memory.
Countee Cullen Another poet that made great strides in the movement of the Renaissance was Cullen. Though Cullen was proud of his heritage, there was a certain doubt he brought to the table. In his poem "Yet I Do Marvel," he speaks a sort of uncertainty as to why, just because he's black. that means he has to be a poet. In his other work, he also speaks of wanting his work to be like another white writer and that makes him no less black, which goes against Hugh's theory that black poetry needs to dig deep into their roots.
Artistic Movements
Avant Guarde : a radical movement in which artists took a stance in modernizing art. This included experimenting with art in an unorthadox way.
Harlem Renaissance was a movement in the black community in Harlem. It was the rise of modern art and literature calling for changes in the world to stop the racism and discrimination.
Pablo Picasso: This piece was highly controversial in it's day because of the big step in modernism. The painting depicts five naked women in a brothel which is not necessarily a popular topic in 1907.
Discovery of Sexuality
Gertrude and Alice's Open Relationship This is obviously something kind of new to people in the mid 1900's because there is this sort of discovery of sexuality. A label had been created at this point. Though the act of homosexuality is not new to mankind, at this point in time, it was a sort of taboo and not spoken of. Stein and Toklas had no intention of keeping their relationship a secret and this contributed to the continuation of modernity.
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a poem by Eliot in 1915. It seems to portray a certain struggle about a man dealing with homosexuality and his lack of ability to come out with it. Of course in this time, there is no way for him to truly be himself without possibly being jailed or killed because it was not accepted. He repeats many times "The women come and go, talking of Michelangelo." This recurring phrase in context seems to almost undermine women and speaks of them with such a lack of disinterest. There is boringness about it, having to go about everyday not being yourself and "measuring your life in coffee spoons.
