Muscles of Anterior and Posterior Thigh
Flexors of Hip Joint
Psoas Minor
I: Pectineal line and iliopubic eminence via iliopectineal arch
A: Act conjointly in flexing thigh at hip joint and in stabilizing this joint
O: Sides of T12- L1 Vertebrae and IV discs
Iliacus
I: Tendons of Psoas major, lesser trochanter, and femur distal to it
A: Act conjointly in flexing thigh at hip joint and in stabilizing this joint
O: Iliac crest, iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, and anterior sacro-iliac ligaments
Psoas Major
I: Lesser trochanter of femur
A: Act conjointly in flexing thigh at hip joint and in stabilizing this joint
O: Sides of T-12-L5 vertebrae and discs between them; transverse processes of all lumbar vertebrae
Sartorius
I: Superior part of medial surface of tibia
A: Flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh at hip joints; flexes leg at knee joint, (medially rotating leg when knee is flexed)
O: ASIS and superior part of notch inferior to it
Pectineus
I: Pectineal line of femur, just anterior to lesser trochanter
A: Adducts and flexes thigh; assist with medial rotation of thigh
O: Superior ramus of pubis
Extensors of Hip and Flexors of Knee
Semimembranosus
I: Posterior part of medial condyle of tibia
A: Extend thigh; flex leg and rotate it medially when knee is flexed. When thigh and leg are flexed, these muscles can extend trunk
O: Ischial Tuberosity
Biceps Femoris
I: Lateral side of head of fibula.
A: Flexes leg and rotates it laterally when knee is flexed; extends thigh
O: Long head - ischial tuberosity, Short head - linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line of femur
Semitendinosus
I: medial surface of superior part of tibia
A: Extend thigh; flex leg and rotate it medially when knee is flexed. When thigh and leg are flexed, these muscles can extend trunk
O: Ischial Tuberosity
Extensors of Knee
Quadriceps Femoris
Rectus Femoris
I: via common tendinous (quadriceps tendon) and independent attachments to base of patella; indirectly via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses (medial and lateral patellar retinacula)
A: Extends leg at knee joint; rectus femoris also steadies hip joint and helps iliopsoas flex thigh
O: AIIS and ilium superior to acetabulum
Vastus Lateralis
I: via common tendinous (quadriceps tendon) and independent attachments to base of patella; indirectly via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses (medial and lateral patellar retinacula)
A: Extends leg at knee joint
O: Greater trochanter and lateral lip of linea aspera of femur
Vastus Medialis
I: via common tendinous (quadriceps tendon) and independent attachments to base of patella; indirectly via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses (medial and lateral patellar retinacula)
A: Extends leg at knee joint
O: Intertrochanteric line and medial lip of linea aspera of femur
Vastus Intermedius
I: via common tendinous (quadriceps tendon) and independent attachments to base of patella; indirectly via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses (medial and lateral patellar retinacula)
A: Extends leg at knee joint
O: Anterior and lateral surfaces of femur
