Advice to a Girl
This poem seems to express advice coming from an adult to a younger girl explaining that people worth possessing cannot be possessed.
Erin had a connection to father and he said that he was truly proud of her. This is extremely important to her because she looked to him as a role model in the way that he helped create a movement.
To a Sad Duaghter
This poem expresses one parents view towards his ever maturing daughter as he has trouble accepting the reality that one day she will move on.

Girls have to deal with their abusive father who is drunk and having an internal crisis.
At Seventeen
This is a poem written from the view of a girl who is struggling to find her place. She sees others from her high school and can see the underlying struggles that people go though as she struggles with a lack of self worth.
Erin wanted to prove to herself that she could do something for the greater good. She thought that it was very important to make a difference in these kids lives.
Gender
Porphyria's Lover
The two people in this poem are in a cabin and the man ends up killing the woman because he is afraid to lose her love.
Erin's husband was upset that she was not spending any time at home, and he said that he didn't want to be 'the wife'.
The Odessey
In the Odyssey, gender roles can be seen because Penelope is expected to just be 'the good wife' and just wait for her husband as he travels around without staying faithful to her.
Story of an Hour
A woman finds out that her husband has died and finally feels free from his abuse and control. It then turns out that he is not dead and she ends up dying from shock or as the doctor says "...a joy that kills".

My Last Duchess
The duke in this poem tells of how he became jealous of how his wife was acting and hints at how he murdered her.
There was a lot of fighting between the gangs and there were grudges that were held between groups based on murders that had happened in previous generations.

For whatever reason groups of people who have some common value will stick together and will fight to prove or protect their beliefs. This can often end up in the form of gang violence.

At one point in the book, when Saul played for the moose, everyone except for him was beat up and urinated on just for the fact that they were 'Indian'.
Importance of Story Telling
In Long Beach there were gangs of people who kept together solely on the colour of their skin. At the high school there were huge fights between the different ethnicities.
Ambition
Erin was determined to help these students who were dealt difficult hands in life, but she thought that they deserved to have an education and she didn't stop until she finished what she promised them.
Big Fish
In Freedom Writers, Indian Horse, and Big Fish it is clear that it is important to tell your story in order to free yourself from it.
Ed Bloom's ambition led him to become a better and better person and made him always strive to go on and do greater things.
Macbeth
Macbeth's ambition made him do terrible things and made him kill his closest friends against his better judgment.
