LIBERATION THEOLOGY & MARXISM
WHAT IS IT/INTRO
Theological movement.
began as intellectual & pacifical among those who worked w/ poor.
PAULO FREIRE:
'conscientisation'- process when someone becomes aware of power structures in society. Education should teach people to read them & should transform society NOT just transmit info.
A TURNAROUND
Trad theology- passing on info.
Lib theo: action before explanation, theology of action.
ORTHOPRAXY
(right practice) before
ORTHODOXY
(right belief).
Kingdom of God- something to work for in this life
GUTIERREZ
Liberation occurs 2 fold
SOCIAL & ECONOMIC
: poverty & oppression- result of humans so they can resolve this.
FROM SIN
: to be reconciled w/ God.
Must happen together.
Poverty NOT occasion for charity.
Bible supports broad based structural change & catholics should encourage redistribute taxation & end to colonial exploitation.
Poverty caused by societal structures, God loves everyone BUT societal structure doesn't give dignity to all.
Not tackling poverty- insult to God.
ANALOGY OF UNIVERSITY LECTURE:
...need to re-arrange hall, reflecting idea- students deserve equal education. Need to change institutions that provide it.
BIBLE EXEGESIS
Exodus 9:1 'Lord said to Moses, 'Go to Pharaoh and say to him...'.
Shows:
action before explanation
. God gives Moses direct instruction.
Matthew 19:24 'easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than rich man to enter the Kingdom of God'.
Shows- shows sacrifice & hard work is needed in this life- KoG.
OSCAR ROMERO
After friend murdered became a strong offender of oppressed,
Declared violation was evil & wrong.
President told him to stay out of politics.
1977: appointed Archbishop of San Salvador.
Believed Church had duty to shine light on Gospel on every area of human activity.
Was shot defending poor.
'God is with me...I am ready for anything'.
Ways in which structure of society can be seen as sinful.
Do we need a radical revolution?
RELATIONSHIP OF LIB THEO W/ MARX
MARX KEY IDEAS, PROBS W/ CAPITALISM
Modern work
ALIENATED
: feeling of disconnection @ work.
Modern work
INSECURE
: makes humans insignificant, e.g, can be sacked as soon as coast rise- save. Technology- people aren't treated w/ dignity.
Works get paid little while capitalists get rich: primitive accumulation- poor wages low to get a large profit margin.
UNSTABLE
: crisis & idea we produce more than we need. Modern economy so productive theres less need to work or people in demand.
CAPITALISM BAD FOR CAPITALISTS
: Commodity Fetishism- capitalist systems made people no longer have deep, honest relationships as economic interests at heart of people's lives, e.g bourgeois marriage.
MARX
ALIENATION
: occurs when humans dehumanised & unable to live fulfilling lives.
EXPLOITATION
: occurs when humans treated as objects & used as means to an end.
LIKE A FACTORY
Working in factory: humans dehumanised.
Work necessary to pay for survival.
were part of a supply chain, purchasing things not knowing who's involved- people alienated.
Our happened @ cheap prices comes @ expense of other people's happiness.
EXPLOITATION
Technology - revolutionised the world & we have less control.
Class division produced when able to produce excess.
Libby Ahluwalia & Robert Bowie:
'Education part of the machine of capitalism and pupils are the cogs in that machine'.
SOCIAL SIN
GUTIERREZ
: warned against using Marxism except mentioned alienation & exploitation. Not getting involved in politics same as helping keep things- same. Being X necessitates being political.
STRUCTRUAL SIN:
injustices experienced by poor. Current system- 1 of structural inequality. Failing to address class struggle we come part of the system.
NOT MARXIST
: lib theo isn't Marxist BUT uses it to analyse society 'purely as an instrument'.- 2 Boff's.
CAPITALISM FAILS NEEDS OF POOR
: socialism might no be perfect but better than capitalism. Valley Fitzgerald: 'capitalism...incapable of satisfying basic needs in Latin America'. Socialism- economic inequality bad for society & government responsible.
'PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR'.
favours oppressed & outcasts, giving priority to poor & Gospel demands X's to give them this & act in solidarity.
e.g. set by Jesus 'whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me'. (Matthew 25:40).
SEGUNDO:
Church 'intends to struggle...for the defence and advancement...especially of the poor'. Allowing social divide isn't compatible w/ peace & justice shown in Bible. lib from sin should come b4 social lib. Even jesus taught 'poor you will always have you, but you will not always have me'. (Matthew 26:11).
JOHN PAULL II:
support of poor- opportunity for moral & cultural growth of humankind. Includes care for spiritual poverty- not just focus on material.
SPIRITUAL POVERTY:
cured by focusing too much on material. Pope Paul II ref drug addiction - indic broken social structure. Encourages CC to be a
'poor Church for the poor'.
