- - - - Oliver is amongst the idealised upper class in society and Rose appears to have a similar innocent nature, giving him a sense of true belonging, perhaps for the first time.Perhaps because of her own questionable background, Rose is able to sympathize with others who are down-and-out in ways that other, more aristocratic, heroines might not. She’s the one who begs Mrs. Maylie to take Oliver in and protect him.
      - But Rose differs from those other heroines in some interesting ways: first of all, she’s not aristocratic by birth. In fact, her birth is pretty questionable. They think, at first, that she is illegitimate, and then later they realize that even though she isn’t illegitimate, she still has a stain on her family honor (her sister got pregnant without being married).
- - - - 'Oliver looked up at the windows', 'with the green leaves fluttering at the windows': within the beauty of nature Oliver recurrently sees his previous life of criminality that has been ingrained in his guilty conscience. This suggests that this new life isn't so perfect and will constantly be loomed over by the impact of criminality in London, reflecting the overwhelming devastation of brutality which Dickens wanted to expose.
  - - - Shows a cyclical structure, as in Chapter 1, Oliver is bought into the world of criminality through his mother's "battle with nature" which was once used as a criminal element, is now described as something serene and brings peace. Oliver begins his life without love in nature, and ends with happiness by being taken in by people who will show him affection.
