what are compounds
what are mixtures
-
they consist of 2 or more substances (elements and/or compounds) which are not joined tgt chemically
-
they may contain more than 1 element, more than 1 compound or elements and compounds togreher
can be in solid, liquid or gaseuos state

what is solubility
when add little salt to water, salt dissolves to form solution
if add more salt, will soon find that no more salt will dissolve in water
-
-
what factors affect it?
type of solute
different solids have different degrees of solubility in solvent, that is, some solids are more soluble than others
eg, with same volume of water, greater amount of sugar dissolves (compared to salt)
-
-
type of solvent
-
eg, solid iodine is almost insoluble in water but is very soluble in hexane
-
temperature
-
as temperature of water increases, most solids (but not all) become more soluble in it
eg, twice as much sugar dissolves in cup of hot water than in equal volume of ice cold water
what is a solution
how is solution formed
when we stir solid sugar in water, solid mixes with water and cannot be seen

-
some substances are not shown in periodic table like: common salt, chalk and water as they are not elements
