understanding diversity of living things :fountain_pen:
pg 106 and 107 for questions and learning outcomes and mystery
pangolin, aka scaly anteater, was once commonly found in SG forests, but now endangered due to deforestation and because some people used to eat them. it has scales on its skkin but classified as mammal
our amazing planet
there is life everywhere
although singapore is small place, it has great diversity of living things
pg 108 for pictures and captions
many kinds of things are referred to as diversity of life, or biodiversity
living things are called organisms
each kind of living things is species.
organisms of same species have 1. common features and 2. are able to mate and produce offspring that can survive and also reproduce
how many kings of living things are there?
there is variety of living things even within each species of plant and animal
this adds to great diversity of living things and ensures continued survival of living things
biodiversity: bio: life, diversity= many kinds
identified about 1250000 species of animals and 300000 species of plants
more are discovered all the time
scientrists estimate that there are more than 70000 species of flowering plants yet to be discovered
there are more animals yet to be discovered
how do we name organisms
plants and animals have names to identify themselves
some organisms are known by different names in different places
to avoid confusion, scientists give standard names to each organism. these are known as scientific names
it consist of 2 latin words and is always written in italics
pg 109
classifying living things
world of living things is very complex.
scientists continually seek to understand this complexity by classifying them
helps us to:
group living things according to similar features, see similarities and differences between living things
see similarities and differences between living things
identify living things
pg 110
how do we classify animals
can be further classified into vertebrates(animals with backbones) and invertebrates (animals without backbones)
most animals on earth are invertebrates. there are about 1200000 kkinds of invertebrates but only 58000 kinds of vertebrates
how do we classify vertebrates?
scientists classify vertebrates into 5 smaller groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals
there are some similarities between the 5 groups of vertebrates. however, amphibians have some characteristics that are different from other groups:
adult amphibians live on land and in water. young amphibians live in water
amphibians have moist skin that aids in breathing underwater
amphibians use gills to breathe for at least part of their lives
pg 111
how do we classify plants
2 main groups: those with flowers( flowering plants) and those without flowers (non flowering plants)
