the scientific endeavour 2
how do we find out in science
scientists read books to know what other scientists have discovered
scientists carry out experiments and think about results they obtain
skills
posing questions
observing
measuring(using apparatus and equipment)
communicating
inferring (including drawing conclusions)
predicing
formulating hypotheses (singular:hypothesis)
thinking skills (including analysing data, organising and communicating resluts)
scientists also carry out more complex tasks, called processess, that use several skills
planning and carry out investigations
creative problem solving
when carrying out experiments, need these skills and processess
also need important attitudes for scientific inquiry
skills needed in science
posing questions
asking questions about things around us
how does this work?what would happen if...? why is this so?
what scientists do
why what where which when and how
use these when asking questions
observing
collect imformation about world around us
use 5 senses--sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch
information collected is either qualitative or quantitative
qualitative info is obtained using senses, such as loudness of sound or taste of food
quantitative data us obtained through using instruments as extensions of senses
eg, describing that sugar makes water sweet when dissolves in water is qualitative
measuring amount of sugar that dissolves is quantitative
look for patterns. eg, all lemons taste sour, sun always rises in east, and pure water always boils at 100 degrees at sea level
important patterns that are accepted by scientists are called laws
all metals expand when heated
like poles of magnets repel:unlike poles attract
Measuring
our senses are inaccurate and they are limited and unreliable sometimes
use instruments(also called measuring instruments)
