Dangers of Factory Farms/Mass Production of Meat
Environmental Dangers
Animal agriculture is the leading cause of GHGs; 50% of global GHG emissions are due to raising animals for food.
A single cow emits up to 65 gallons of methane per day.
The climate is changing largely because of the GHGs emitted on factory farms.
7 million pounds of waste per minute is released into the environment by animals raised for food.
Waste contributes to a lack of biodiversity.
Waste contributes to ocean dead zones and the killing off of fish.
Soil is depleted on factory farms.
It takes 2000 gallons of water to produce just one pound of beef.
Air and water pollution are rampant among areas where factory farms exist.
Deforestation is happening at an alarming rate to make space for livestock.
Mental Health Dangers to Factory Farm/Slaughterhouse Workers
Workers are subject to PTSD, depression, paranoia, night terrors, and abnormal animal cruelty due to the fact that they are murdering sentient beings for a living.
Workers in slaughterhouses are often underpaid minorities of color who cannot afford to leave this job, despite the awful conditions.
Workers often fall to alcoholism or methamphetamine addiction in order to deal with the conditions listed above.
There is an increased rate of crime in neighborhoods where factory farms exist due to the hostility and mental instability of the workers.
There is increase in violent behavior towards animals and people in those who work on factory farms.
Physical Health Dangers
The saturated fats in factory farmed meat often lead to cancer of the colon and breasts, as well as contribute to cardiovascular disease and other degenerative diseases.
Heart disease and obesity are linked to factory farmed meat products.
Growth hormones fed to the animals are linked to different types of cancers in humans.
The antibiotics fed to animals that become meat contribute to the development of drug-resistant diseases in animals and humans, which are often incurable and cause 90,000 deaths per year.
The viruses found in factory farmed meat (E.Coli, salmonella, MRSA, etc.) infect and kill thousands of Americans per year. This is because of poor waste management and the ways in which animals are arranged in factory farms.
Zoonotic diseases (H1N1) due to poor waste management/crowding of animals have the capability of becoming pandemics.
Solutions
Go vegetarian/vegan and stop purchasing meat altogether.
Invest in plant-based burgers, such as the Impossible Burger, to fulfill meaty cravings while curbing environmental damage.
Support local small-time farms, whether you buy meat or not; do not support large-scale factory farms.
Reach out to congress and demand reform for workers in slaughterhouses.
Protest the mass production of meat.
