-These have a frequency greater than 20kHz, so they cannot be heard by humans. When an ultrasonic wave meets a boundary between 2 different media it is partially reflected. It is possible to determine how far away a boundary is by measuring the time taken for the reflected ultrasonic waves to return to a detector. This technique can be used to detect defects in products without having to actually cut into them. It can also be used in medicine to detect kidney stones and tumours, pre-natal scanning, and producing images of damaged ligaments and muscles
