The "American Dream"
Between 1880 - 1920
25 million
America from other countries
Immigrants - Europe
Escape terrible poverty
Had heard rumors
the streets of America were paved with gold
Believed America - land of opportunities
Unfortunaly - poured into cities in such large numbers
that there weren't enough resources to go around
Life was not easy for them
To experience the "AM"
be functional in the society and get work
both speak and understand English
if you learned English, you got work
because of this policy
people had to learn English
Belief that anyone
regardless of where they were born or what class
can attain their own version of success
in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone
the AM is achieved through:
sacriface
risk-taking and hard work
not by chance
