Damages
an amount of money awarded to the plaintiff, paid by the defendant

Types of damages
Contemptuous = small sum awarded when plaintiff has suffered no harm, but brought case on a 'petty' point of law. Recognises plaintiff is technically right but shows court's disapproval for bring case.
Nominal = small sum awarded when plaintiff has suffered legal harm but not financial harm to recognise plaintiff's rights
Exemplary = large sum awarded when defendant has acted maliciously to punish defendant and deter behaviour
Compensatory = awarded to plaintiff to compensate for the monetary value of rights or property where it is not possible to return to original position
Aggravated = awarded if court believes defendant's conduct injured the plaintiff's feelings and caused humiliation and insult
General = assessed by the court according to the magnitude and long-term consequences of the infringement
