Rich
Houses
Much bigger than rich
Started to be built out of brick instead of wood or wattle and daub
Towards end 16th century houses began have more rooms; more privacy
Jobs
Aristocrats helped king run country; they very rich and powerful
Members of gentry owned one or more estates and had tenant farmers working on their land
Citizens = rich people who lived in towns - some merchants or master craftsmen
^^Some helped run country by acting as Justices Of The Peace
Yeomen = farmers who owned or rented land - lived reasonably comfortable life
Lot more possessions than the poor
Entertainment
Played handball, football, skittles, shovel board, stoolball, goffe, trollmadam, cudgels, bear-baiting, bull baiting, bow and arrow, shuttlecock, cock fighting
Puritans thought people should work hard, live simple lives and not to anything but focus on God on sundays
Marriage
Rich people didn’t marry for love
Married to increase power and wealth for their families
Parents often arranged marriages
People could get married very young - rich people often got married younger than poor people
Sometimes violence in marriage
Male/Father head of family
Marriages often short, women often die during childbirth
Children often died before they were one year old
Fathers often wanted sons rather than daughters to carry on family one
Men in family expencted to look after family and provide food for them

Houses
Made of earth walls and thatched roofez

Jobs
9 out of 10 people lived in countryside and worked on land
Often struggle most people feed themselves
Towns people kept cattle on th common
Spinning and weaving to make little extra money
People with no home or jobs called vagrants
Vagrants often punished; as time went on, people decided to help
Henry VIII closed monasteries; made poor poorer
Hospital formed and money sometimes given to poor
Entertainment
Rich had parks for hunting
They played tennis, bowling, billiards
They liked to have feasts, they ate a lot of meat and sugar because it was expensive
They had stage plays, masques, dancing, singing + all sorts of musical instruments
Marriage
Poor people more likely to marry for love
Marriages still got arranged, but not as often
Tended to marry older than rich; they had to save up and wait until they had enough money to get married
