THE GEOSPHERE
(MINERALS AND ROCKS)
IGNEOUS ROCKS
Two types
Volcanic rocks
-
For example: Basalt, pumice and obsidian.
-
Plutonic rocks
-
Examples: Granite most abundant on land and used in construction. Peridotite the most abundant rock in mantle

ROCKS
Characteristics
-
Origin:
Igneous: Lava or magma from the Earth's mantle solidifies.
Sedimentary: Formed from sediments or fragments of other rocks.
Metamorphic: Can be formed by extreme pressure and heat
Texture: Depends on the form, size and distribution of the grains or crystals it contain

METAMORPHIC ROCKS
-
For example:
Slate: Tiny crystals, not visible to the naked eye
Schist: It's crystals can be seen easily
Gneiss: This is formed of larger crystals than schist
They've been transformed over time by intense
heat and pressure, deep under the ground
