Nuclear power plants (How does a nuclear power plant work (Nuclear waste…

        Because we are recycling nuclear fuel, we need less fuel for more energy, so we have less waste
  - - - The steamturbine connected to the electricity generator
        
        The steamturbine is powered by the presure of the steam
        
        The steamturbine is connected by a hup to the electricity generator
      - The cooling-system
        
        After the steam went to the steamturbine, it goes to a condenser
        
        Inside the condenser, the steam becomes water again and after that, the water goes again to the heat exchanger.
        
        The condenser is mostly cooled by a nearby river or lake, but it can be cooled as well by a cooling-tower
      - The reactor
        
        In the reactor are rods with nuclear fuel, mostly uranium or plutonium
        
        Uranium or plutonium is subject to a nuclear reaction
        
        The nuclear reaction
        
        A neutron will shoot away and hit an other uranium or plutonium atom.
        
        The atom will split up.
        
        There also fires a couple other neutrons to an other atom, so the reaction goes on. It's an chain reaction
        
        And there is heat and radioactivity produced
        
        First an uranium or plutonium atom split up, producing a few neutrons
        
        Water inside the reactor warms up (by the heat of the nuclear reaction) and flows to a heat exchanger
        
        Inside the heat exchanger are metal pipes
        
        The metal pipes warms up by the hot water of the reactor and warms the water inside the heat exchanger up.
        
        The water inside the heat exchanger is going to boil and evaporate to steam.
        
        The steam goes through pipes to the steamturbine
        
        The reactor is inside the containment building
        
        The containment building is made of meters thick reinforced concrete.
        
        After the hot, radioactive water went through the pipes of the heatexchanger, the water is pumped back to the reactor to warm up again.
        
        A heat exchanger only transmits heat, but it doesn't transmits radioation so the second system isn't radioactive
  - - - Cooling the fuel
        
        The fuel produces also during a shutdown al bit of heat. This has to be cooled. If the normal cooling system doesn't work there are 2 other systems:
        
        Another smaller cooling system flows cold water through the reactor
        
        On the outside of a nuclear reactor is havy water. This water cools the reactor and retain the radiation. If this water isn't anymore in the containment building an other system sprays water on the reactor
        
        This cooling-systems needed electricity so there are
        
        2-3 standby power-generators
        
        2-3 emergency power-generator
        
        Emergency batteries
      - containing radiation
        
        The radiation is in the Uranium
        
        Uranium in fuel pellets
        
        Fuelpellets in Fuelrods

        There are a lot of think around the uranium so the radiation can't go outside the containment building
      - Controling the reactor
        
        The reactor is constantly controled. If there happens something weird, there are 2 shutdownsystems:
        
        Place control rods between the fuel rods. These rods will stop the nuclear reaction
        
        To inject a liquid that will stop the nuclear reaction

    - - We don't know what to do whit it
        
        We store it. But we don't know what to do whit it.
