King Philip of Spain was one of the richest men at the time and was a strong Catholic, yet he cared more about his empire then his religion. Queen Elizabeth was a protestant and Philip wanted to keep the good relationship that they had for two main reasons:
- Philip knew that if Elizabeth was overthrown Mary, Queen of Scots would become queen, would become Queen. She was Catholic but had a goo relationship with France, Spain's enemys
- Spain owned the Netherlands, which was the centre of trade, and Spain's main route there was through the English channel
