Small Intestine
It is the site of complete digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats
-
The food coming from the stomach is acidic and has to be made alkaline for the pancreatic juices to act on
-
-
-
The enzymes in it convert, Proteins --> Amino acids, Carbohydrates --> Glucose, Fats --> Fatty acids & glycerol
The inner lining of the small intestine have small finger like projections called villi - they increase the surface area of absorption
The villi are richly supplied with blood vessels which take the absorbed food to every cell of the body
The cells use it for energy, repair old tissues, build new tissues
-
-
-
Bile salts break them down into smaller globules so that enzymes can act on them better - emulsification of fats
