Fishing
Impact on the environment.
I feel there is a positive impact on the environment since First Nations only take enough fish to eat. Dead fish in the rivers are used to fertilize the forests since they are dragged out by eagles and bears
Part 2
I contribute to my First Nations family and larger community by helping to provide food that can last throughout the year. It is used at ceremonial potlatches to feed many guests from other bands.
Action Plan
I plan on going out fishing this summer with my dad fishing on the ocean. I also will help with the gill net fishing throughout the year. I have learnt how to fix the nets, and can both do hot and cold smoking. I can also gut and filet fish.
Economics
We are allowed to sell our extra fish outside our community. The only condition is that it is sold by the pound. The revenue goes towards new nets, rods and boats.
Problem:Some members of the community over fish and do not eat their catch. The fish are tossed out. A solution to this problem would be to take the bones of these fish and put them back in the part of the river where they were caught. This so the fish will repopulate.
Types of fish I catch :
sockeye , coho, spring , pink , dog fish and trout

coho
August
Both Sockeye and Coho salmon are fresh/salt water fish caught with a rod and long line on the ocean with a boat.
-
Sockeye and pink salmon are best used for hot smoking. Coho is made into jerky. Spring are good for just cooking and trout are best barbecued.

Gillnetting is a common method of fishing used by both commercial and artisanal fishermen of all oceans and in some estuary and freshwater areas. Gillnetts are vertical panels of netting set in a straight line. My community uses them just in rivers. Fish can be caught in 3 different ways: 1) wedged: This is when the fish is held by mesh around body. 2) gilled: held by mesh behind the opercula. 3) tangled: held by the teeth, spines or other protrusions without the body entering the mesh. Fish are usually gilled. This method of fishing is highly effective so it is regulated by DFO-Department of Fisheries and Oceans management and enforcement agencies. They closely monitor the process. Mesh size, twine strength, as well as length and depth are closely regulated to reduce bycatch of non target species. Fisheries have an extremely low incidence of catching non target species. Nets are used during the daytime, early in the morning. Four people set up the net. It is weighted down or tied to trees so it doesn't drift off. Nets get ripped so need mending each time they are used. I have learnt to use the mending needle to repair them. The net hopefully full of fish is dragged in. It takes lots of muscle which keeps me fit.! Then the fish are gutted . I use a very sharp knife called a fillet knife for gutting and cleaning the catch. We are allowed to keep a quarter of the catch and sell the rest. The fish go fast !
