types of geological faults
compression
where the two plates are forced against one another, found at destructive plate margins, results in crustal shortening and thickening, E.G. fold mountain formation.
normal and reverse faults
shear
where the two plate margins slide past one another, found at conservative plate margins, E.G. fault zones.
sinistral strike slip fault (left moves forwad) and dextral strike slip fault (right moves forward)
tension
where the two plate margins are forced away from one another, found at constructive plate margins, results in crustal thinning, E.G. mid ocean ridges and rift valleys.
oblique slip fault
key words
Upthrown
rocks forced upward towards the surface at the plate margin
Downthrown
rocks forced down through the crust at plate margins
Graben
downthrown block bound by normal faults
Hanging wall
rock bed that has moved up at the plate margin pushed up be the upthrown margin and now hangs over the opposing bed on the downthrown fault
Horst
upthrown block bound by normal faults
