Characteristics of the Environment
Made up of the living and non- living factors that affect the organism, which affect the survival of the living things found in the environment
Non- living factors
Light
The amount of light from the Sun affects the temperature of surroundings
Plants need light energy to carry out photosynthesis
Helps predators to see their prey
Can be measured by a light sensor connected to a datalogger
Temperature
Can be measured using a laboratory thermometer or a temperature sensor connected to a datalogger
Most organisms are adapted to live within a particular temperature range
The temperature of the surroundings affects the amount of water available to organisms
Air
Can be measured using an oxygen sensor connected to a datalogger
Is an important component of the environment that the survival of an organism because it is needed for respiration & photosynthesis (plants)
Less air is available in places that are high up on mountains
Water
Is needed to carry out life processes
Is used to transport dissolved gases, food & waste through body of organisms
Measured using a measuring cyclinder
Some can only breathe & live in water/ need water to complete their life cycle/ have mechanisms for storing water
Too much can cause floods, too little can cause drought
Soil
Some plants need soil to grow
The type of plants that can grow in a habitat depend on the type of soil in the habitat
Plants get water & mineral salts from the ground, and grow into it & hold on to it tightly to support the plant
Some animals make their home in soil as soil provides protection from heat, light & predators
Living Factors
Food
Affects the survival of an organism
Provides living things with energy to carry out their life processes and to do work
Plants make their own food while others depend directly/ indirectly on food made by plants
Organisms that can find food easily are more likely to stay alive than organism that have to search for their food
Other organisms
Organisms interact with other organisms living in the same habitat, which can be helpful or harmful
Affects the survival of an organism in that environment
Some animals are herbivores, some are carnivores, others are omnivores
Some bacteria & fungi are decomposers
Some organisms can cause disease in other organisms, affecting the population of the organisms
