Reproduction in plants
Stage 2: Pollination
-
Agents of pollination:
Insect and bird
-
-
flowers are usually large, brightly coloured and scented
pollen grains are large, sticky or spiky
-
self-pollination
the pollen grain from the anther is transferred to the stigma in the same flower or a different flower in the same plant
-
-
cross-pollination
The pollen grains from the anther of one plant is transferred to the stigma of another plant of the same kind
It is favoured as the offspring are healthier and better quality seeds are produced. Young plant may combine good qualities of both parent plants.
-
Stage 1: Germination
-
The root grow downwards in search of water and mineral salts. Next the shoot grow upwards to get enough air and sunlight. After the first pair of leaves unfold, the plant will be able to make its own food.
-
Stage 4: Dispersal
The process in which the seeds are being dispersed and scattered away from the parent plant to prevent overcrowding.
